This is the opening 4 minutes of the documentary film "Built to Serve" for United Supermarkets.
It's part of a 60 minute film about the history and day-to-day operations of a fourth-generation, family-owned supermarket chain.
It was shown in all 26 markets United serves and was also shown on PBS. I produced, directed and edited the film and shot many of the interviews and in-store footage. We shot in several formats, including DVCam and 35mm film. Cinematography is by Britt West, Dwight Harper and my Dallas crew. The time lapse was shot by Phillip Thomas of Dallas. The film was post-scored by David Kneupper in Los Angeles, with sound design and final mixing by John Roman and David at Kneupper Music in LA.
Dan Sanders, former CEO of United wrote the script and the narration is by actor Frankie Faison, who appeared in all the Hannibal Lector movies as "Barney" and also starred in the HBO series "The Wire". We travelled to New York to record Frankie at a studio in downtown Manhattan. He was a delight to work with. The film features Team Members and Guests from various United and Market Street stores. There are also cameos from Dr. Stephen Covey, Marsha Sharp, Ken Blanchard and Leonard Barry of Texas A&M.
The film was shot in several United/Market Street markets as well as Provo, Utah...Skaneateles, New York and College Station, Texas.
Segment 2 of Built to Serve film
This is the second of eight segments of the documentary about United Supermarkets and focuses on the Market Street in McKinney, Texas.
This segment of the film traced the history of United Supermarkets and world history at the time. Vintage footage and photos, plus, reenactments of the first United store in Sayre, Oklahoma (actually shot in Heritage Park in Dallas). Archival footage is from Getty Images and from the United Supermarkets collection in Lubbock and Sayre Oklahoma. I created the motion graphics from historical photos and antique ads.
Segment 8 of Built to Serve
This is the final segment of the film and wraps up the hour long journey of United's history and legacy. It features Ken Blanchard, author of numerous Business Ethics books and Gantt & Matt Bumstead, Co-Presidents and fourth generation owners of United Supermarkets, LLC.
